In 1984, one of the most dramatic and sharp matches for the chess crown began. The world champion Anatoly Karpov and the challenger Garry Kasparov came together in a duel.
Never before has there been such an unpredictable and intriguing battle of grandmasters.
Initially, Karpov took the lead and led 4-0, then 17 draws followed, and Karpov won again. For an absolute victory, it remained to win one more game, but he could not – the score became 5:1, then 5:2 and 5:3. However, the number of draws increased to 40.
After that, FIDE President Florencio Campomanes interrupted the match without announcing the winner, referring to the exhausted physical and psychological resources of the participants.
This championship became a record in the history of chess, it lasted more than 5 months, 48 games were played.
