Chapter 6: My Hell
Demadrian slowly opened his eyes. He was lying in his bed in his apartment at the Alset North facility.
‘It was all a dream,’ said Demadrian to himself. ‘A terrible nightmare.’
Demadrian got out of bed. He went into his bathroom to freshen up. After that, he went into his small kitchen. There was a plate of pancakes covered in syrup and a glass of pineapple juice placed at the kitchen bar.
‘Hmm, this smells great,’ he said as he joyfully tucked into the pancakes.
Ten minutes later, he had finished. He stepped out of his apartment and entered a corridor. His favourite song was softly playing over the speakers. Demadrian began walking towards his laboratory. He had a bounce in his step.
A few minutes later, he walked through a door into a large room. A large banner that read, ‘Congratulations, You’ve Done It' was hanging from the ceiling. Beneath the banner were the Hat Lady and Demadrian's former assistant. Standing behind them were the mothers from his experiment. They were holding their infant babies.
‘Here is the Alset of the hour,’ said the Hat Lady in a delighted tone as she walked over to Demadrian.
‘It is a big day, I guess,’ said Demadrian, sounding surprised and a little confused.
‘It’s much more than that,’ said the Hat Lady as she wrapped her arms around Demadrian. ‘You’ve brought us into the future. Hundreds of thousands of years of evolution in one generation.’
‘Yes, the super babies,’ said Demadrian.
Lucy walked towards Demadrian. She was holding her baby, who was wrapped in a white blanket. ‘Look at my baby Duffo,’ she said. ‘He’s so special because of you.’
Lucy pulled the blanket back to reveal the hideous face of her baby. Demadrian gasped in shock.
‘Isn’t he just perfect,’ said Lucy with a broad smile on her face.
‘I think this shitbag’s jealous,’ shouted Duffo as he rapidly reached out and slashed Demadrian’s face with a blade.
Demadrian screamed as he quickly put his hands over his bleeding face.
‘He’s just having a bit of fun,’ chuckled his assistant.
All the mothers began laughing. Demadrian turned to leave, but two guards rushed through the door.
‘The experiments are over, you sick pervert!’ shouted the first guard as both guards pulled out their guns.
They began shooting at the mothers. Demadrian tried to stop them but was shot himself. He fell to the ground. One of the guards stood over him. He pointed the gun at his head and shot him in the forehead.
Demadrian abruptly woke up. He was back in his bed in his apartment again. He went into his bathroom and had a quick shower. After that, he entered his kitchen. Locum was in the middle of the room, sitting in his wheelchair.
‘Grandfather, you’re back!’ said Demadrian in a shocked tone.
‘No!’ replied Locum. ‘I have only just truly arrived.’
‘I don’t understand,’ said Demadrian, sounding confused.
‘That’s the problem,’ said Locum firmly. ‘You never understand anything of value. I gave you my greatest gift. You were supposed to use it for good. You used it to destroy everything.’
‘I did it for our family,’ replied Demadrian.
‘You wiped us from the face of Sapey!’ shouted Locum as he rose from his wheelchair. ‘And you replaced us with this.’
Locum was now holding up the hideous-looking baby.
‘It’s all wrong,’ said Demadrian as a look of terror came over his face.
‘What’s on the inside is on the outside for you to see!’ shouted Locum as he shapeshifted into the Hat Lady.
‘Get it away from me!’ said Demadrian as he backed away from the Hat Lady, who was now walking towards him.
Demadrian fell over backwards. The Hat Lady hurled the baby at Demadrian. The baby bit his face hard. Demadrian grabbed the baby and threw him to the ground.
‘Just like you to abandon your creation,’ shouted the Hat Lady as she shapeshifted into his mother. ‘No different than how you abandoned your own family in the tunnels to die.’
A guard burst into the apartment holding a flamethrower. ‘We’ll clean this up!’ he shouted as he set Demadrian’s mother ablaze.
Demadrian leapt on his mother to put out the flames. In doing so, he set himself on fire.
Demadrian abruptly woke up. He was panting in desperation.
‘Good morning, my darling,’ said the Hat Lady, who was sitting next to him on the bed.
Demadrian quickly got off the bed. ‘Stay away from me,’ said Demadrian as he pressed his back against the wall.
‘It’s okay,’ said the Hat Lady as she slowly stood up. ‘It was just a bad dream. Everything is fine.’
The look of terror remained on his face. The Hat Lady walked over to him. She placed her hand gently on his cheek. ‘You need to relax,’ she said to him in a soothing voice.
Demadrian’s breathing began to gradually slow. ‘You gave us something so special,’ said the Hat Lady as she put her arms around Demadrian, who embraced her in return.
The Hat Lady dropped her arms and took a step back. Blood began to ooze from her mouth. She began to shake. Demadrian was struck with fear once again.
Suddenly, the hideous baby burst through the Hat Lady’s chest. Blood splattered over Demadrian, and the baby dropped to the floor. Demadrian desperately tried to get away from the baby who was crawling towards him.
The bedroom door seemed so far away. Demadrian ran towards it. He finally reached it, but it would not open. He turned around. The baby had grown bigger and was slowly walking towards him. The door behind him swung open. Demadrian rushed in and shut the door behind him. He was in his lounge. Everything had gone quiet.
Demadrian felt slightly relieved. Suddenly, the door he had just closed was smashed off its hinges. Demadrian turned to face the door. Duffo walked through the door; he was now fully grown. As he walked closer, his face began to melt off his skull.
‘Get away from me!’ gasped Demadrian as he walked backwards. His heart was beating so hard it felt like it was going to explode.
The Hat Lady, who had appeared behind him, leapt on his back.
‘You did this,’ said the Hat Lady in his ear. ‘You did all this.’
Demadrian tried to shake her off, but she responded by biting his ear. Demadrian screamed as she continued to chew on his ear. He finally flipped her over his shoulder and onto the floor.
Duffo grabbed Demadrian by the neck and lifted him off the ground. The flesh began to melt off Demadrian. Duffo was somehow absorbing him. The liquidation of his flesh was causing Demadrian unimaginable pain. The extreme pressure of Duffo’s hand on Demadrian’s almost skeletal neck prevented him from even screaming.
Suddenly, Demadrian awoke once again in his bed. He was alone, and it was silent. Demadrian sat up. He looked around in anticipation of something to happen. All remained quiet.
Demadrian flopped back down onto his bed and closed his eyes. A few seconds later, he felt something cold touch his face. He opened his eyes. He was no longer in his bedroom. He was no longer lying on his bed. He was now outside lying in the snow.
Demadrian quickly got up. He looked around. He was in the mountains in the North. He saw smoke in the distance. He began to jog in the direction of the smoke. As he got closer, he could see a figure walking towards him. Demadrian slowed to a walk. He recognised the figure. It was his aunt, Patricia.
‘I tried to fix your mess,’ shouted Patricia as she continued to approach Demadrian. ‘Where is your gratitude?’
‘You’re crazy,’ shouted Demadrian as he continued to walk towards her.
‘I almost killed them all,’ said Patricia as she stopped several metres in front of Demadrian. ‘I wanted to save our family. I wanted to save our species.’
Demadrian stopped and stared at Patricia.
‘Where is your gratitude?’ shouted Patricia. ‘Where is your gratitude?’
‘You’re a monster,’ shouted Demadrian. ‘You got what you deserved.’
Patricia flopped down into the snow.
Demadrian stood over her. He looked down at her bloodied face.
‘You’ve only ever brought us suffering,’ gasped Patricia in her final breath.
A strong gust of wind blew in Demadrian’s face. He was forced to look away. The wind quickly died down. Patricia had now disappeared. Demadrian saw movement in the distance ahead of him. It was coming from the smoke.
It soon became clear that dozens of babies were crawling towards him. They quickly grew to become children and then adults. As they came closer, Demadrian could see their faces. They looked like zombies. Most of the flesh was missing from their faces.
Demadrian turned around and began to run. He ran as fast as he could. Ahead of him, he could see a flying vehicle.
‘Wait!’ shouted Demadrian. ‘Wait!’
The pilot turned to face him. It was the Hat Lady. ‘Quick!’ she shouted. ‘Get in. We must leave.’
Demadrian jumped into the flying vehicle just as it took off. He had narrowly escaped the zombie-like creatures.
‘It’s going to be fine,’ said the Hat Lady. ‘We’re all safe now.’
Demadrian heard a faint cry from the back seat of the flying vehicle. There were two babies wrapped in blankets.
‘No,’ said Demadrian in a desperate tone. ‘We must get rid of them.’
‘Don’t be silly,’ chuckled the Hat Lady. ‘They’re just babies.’
Demadrian turned around and grabbed the babies. They both immediately began to attack him savagely. The Hat Lady smashed Demadrian in the face and then pushed him out of the flying vehicle. He landed in the snow.
Demadrian slowly got to his feet. He looked around. He was surrounded by the zombie-like creatures. They charged towards him.
Demadrian screamed in terror. The next thing he knew, he was lying in his bed again. This time, he could hear cheering outside his door.
Demadrian sat up in his bed. He stared at his bedroom door. The roaring and cheering became louder. Demadrian stared at the door for a few more seconds, but he could not resist the urge to open it.
Demadrian opened the door. He found himself in the old Capital City Square. There was a huge cheering crowd in front of him. Demadrian started to push his way through the crowd. Suddenly, the crowd parted in front of him. Demadrian’s father, Hadrian, was tied to a tall stake.
‘Cut him down!’ shouted Demadrian. ‘Cut him down, now!’
Around twenty metres to the right of the stake was a small stage. On this stage was Ricardo. He was standing next to a game-show-type wheel.
‘What do you think?’ shouted Ricardo. ‘Shall we let this mass-murdering maniac free or shall we torch his sorry arse?’
‘Torch him! Torch him!’ shouted the crowd.
‘No, he’s innocent!’ shouted Demadrian. ‘Let him go!’
‘Innocent, he shouts,’ shouted Ricardo as he scanned the crowd with his eyes. ‘Does he know something that you brain-dead morons don’t? Come up on stage, sir, and make your case.’
Demadrian climbed up on stage to the boos of the crowd.
‘Your daddy only confessed to this heinous crime because he wanted to protect you,’ stated Ricardo into the microphone that mysteriously appeared in his hand.
‘He did it for his family,’ replied Demadrian.
‘We all knew it!’ shouted Ricardo as he turned aggressively towards the angry crowd. ‘Your rotten family are as guilty as this lot are stupid.’
‘No, we’re all innocent,’ shouted Demadrian. ‘Tiberius framed us.’
‘Did he now?’ chuckled Ricardo as his face briefly shapeshifted to that of the Hat Lady’s. ‘Let’s not debate semantics. Let’s give Demadrian a chance to help save his courageous and evil father. I say let him spin the wheel of justice.’
The wheel was segmented into twelve sections. One section read ‘Burn Him’, and all the others had question marks on them.
‘Go on, spin it, son,’ shouted Hadrian. ‘You can save me.'
Demadrian grabbed the spinner and spun it around. It rotated seven or eight times before landing on a question mark.
‘Oh, a mystery prize,’ said Ricardo in delight. He ripped the question mark from the segment to reveal the words ‘Spin Again’.
‘You lucky, shit,’ said Ricardo. ‘You get to play again.’
Demadrian spun again, and the spinner landed on another question mark. Ricardo revealed the words ‘Spin Again’.
‘Such luck,’ said Ricardo as he pranced around the stage. ‘Spin again, bastard.’
Demadrian spun again, and the spinner landed on another question mark. Ricardo slowly pulled off the question mark to reveal, ‘Swap with Daddy’.
‘That adds a bit of spice to the game!’ shouted Ricardo.
Within an instant, Demadrian was tied to the stake, and Hadrian was standing by the wheel.
‘Want to save your boy one more time,’ shouted Ricardo as he raised his eyebrows up and down.
The crowd booed loudly. Hadrian grabbed the spinner and spun it around the wheel. The spinner landed on another question mark.
‘Oh let’s see what we have this time,’ chuckled Ricardo as he slowly pulled the question mark off the segment.
He revealed the words ‘Burn the Spinner’.
‘Just when you thought you were safe, bastard!’ shouted Ricardo, who now had a huge flamethrower in his hands.
‘No!’ screamed Demadrian.
Ricardo set Hadrian ablaze. Hadrian stumbled off the stage and fell to the ground in front of the cheering crowd.
‘The wheel of justice has struck again!’ shouted Ricardo.
The crowd cheered loudly and fanatically. The cheers soon turned to hysterical laughter as Hadrian got to his feet and began running around while still engulfed in fire.
Ricardo, with a huge smile on his face, stared at Demadrian. His face began to decompose rapidly. Demadrian looked at the laughing crowd. They now appeared like zombies.
Hadrian, still ablaze, leapt onto Demadrian.
‘I’m going to save you, son!’ he shouted as both of them went up in flames.
Demadrian woke up screaming in his bed. Standing at the end of the bed was Patricia.
‘Congratulations, you’ve completed the first five days of your hundred-year game,’ said Patricia as she lifted her arms in the air.
‘Please, just kill me!’ begged Demadrian as he pressed himself against the headboard.
‘That’s our guarantee,’ said Patricia as she shapeshifted into the Hat Lady. ‘We’re going to kill you in new, exciting, and personal ways every single day.’
Demadrian tilted his head back and screamed out in terror as several hideously deformed babies crawled onto his bed.
