Gaze outside your window
As crystalline clouds
Blanket the fallen leaves of autumn.
Listen to the melodies decrescendo
As mundane sounds fade
And a magical landscape takes shape.
Feel the approaching freeze
As gentle winds
Carry its wintry promise.
But beware the numbing air
And look closer to the icy scene.
Because the ice conceals
As much as it reveals.
And underneath its snowy cloak
Could be a cracked slab of granite, waiting for its due;
Or dark murky waters, ready to crack without notice.
But it could also be the life of spring,
About to start anew.
Watch it snow.
A day late, but I'm jumping back in. Here is my entry for Day 1109 of 's 5-Minute Freewrite. The prompt is watch it snow.
I started by writing about the imagery of snow---beautiful, enchanting, and magical. However, I eventually found myself dwelling on its mysterious and eerie qualities. It's hard to tell what's underneath the the snow, after all.
Thank you for reading.
