Captain Lee had his therapist on speaker phone as he was driving back to Big Loft; it was still only 8:30, and since it was the last night before his last Reserve Weekend, he intended to spend a good more time with his fiancee, Maggie Thornton.
Captain Lee generally kept his vehicles at a private garage, away from his downtown residence, but, since his fiancee's car had been destroyed in a car accident, he had given her keys to both his vehicles and permitted her to use his Lexus as her daily vehicle. She took meticulous care of it, something Captain Lee had immediately and gratefully observed.
That was the thing about Maggie Thornton; every move she made caused her fiance to fall more and more in love with her. Now they did have their disagreements, of course, but they would sit around and work those out in a way that brought honor and peace to both of them, with an agreement from both that, “If this doesn't work out the way I think it will, I'll be responsible for cleaning it up and we'll try it the way you want.”
Henry Fitzhugh Lee had not even thought at the beginning of 2019 that he would be signing up again for the ball and chain of matrimony.
At the end of 2019, he still was having trouble wrapping his mind around it.
But, as he put up his truck and walked toward the apartment building they both lived in, the reality itself sunk in – a weighty joy, but definitely a joy.
