Hiding in the wardrobe is the usual trick of the old game, hide and seek. It baffles me why someone will think a wardrobe is a safe space. Even if you hide behind the clothes and it is dark, this is the instinct the seeker has too. He assumes you will take the same line of thought, and most often we do, especially as a kid.
I think it is safe to say we all hid in the wardrobe at one point or another. As kids, hiding in the wardrobe or hiding under the bed seem like the best hiding spot. And it is so much fun hiding and playing the game, but now I know better now.
