He opened his eyes to a new world. He hadn't expected the vortex to take him so swiftly and without any ill effects, as far as he could tell, anyway. It happened literally in a blink of an eye.
The air was breathable, so there was that, at least.
The temperature was also just about right, a little cold perhaps, he thought pulling his jacket tight around his neck, but within normal limits.
It was dark.
Nighttime perhaps, or maybe he had materialised (was that the right word for this form of travel?) inside somewhere. He blinked his eyes, trying to get them to adjust. He could see some shapes of things that looked like trees.
Outside then, perhaps.
He took a deep breath. It smelt sweet, like the forest near his home after a heavy rainfall. For a moment, he wondered if the device had failed. Perhaps he had not been transported to a different world but somewhere else on his own planet. He took a step forward.
It was time to explore.
