He wore flared trousers, platformed shoes and brightly coloured clothing. In Ker's opinion, Lippen was trying too hard to draw attention to himself.
"Why does everyone think Lippen is cool?" he asked Helen, one morning as they waited for the bus. The day was dry but bitingly cold and Helen shivered as she pulled her scarf tightly around her neck.
"He has a certain style," she acknowledged. "That you either like or not. But he seems to be a nice guy. Genuinely eccentric."
Ker shook his head and stamped his feet, trying to knock some feeling into his numb toes.
"I can't wait to see him fall on his arse in those ridiculous shoes," he chuckled, without humour. "They sure as hell aren't made for ice and snow."
Helen looked away from Ker.
"I don't know why you are so mean," she said. "You can be such a generous, lovely person. But sometimes you say nasty things."
