Billy had never met a real author before. Come to think of it he had never met a real policeman before. Apart from PC Holden who came in to talk to the class about drugs last year. But he hadn't shaken PC Holden's hand, so that probably didn't count.
One of mum's previous boyfriends, Kevin, had claimed he was writing a book. But when he left mum said that spending all day watching naked women mud wrestle on the internet was not her idea of writing a book.
Billy had never really liked Kevin. He smelled funny and had false teeth even though he wasn't very old. He told Billy that he had lost them in a bet with the tooth fairy, but Billy didn't believe in the tooth fairy and didn't believe Kevin either.
Billy looked at Mr Painter. He looked like he was a policeman. Very tall, smartly dressed and serious looking. He had a frown that seemed to be a permanent fixture on his face. But he didn't look mean, or cruel. Just a bit sad. Billy thought he probably had seen a lot of things in his time as a police office that would make anyone sad. Mr Painter shook Billy's hand with a firm grip.
