Mark pushed his way to the front of the crowd. Jan stood talking to a large policeman, blue and red flashing lights illuminating her face.
"What's happening?" Mark asked.
"You know the sweet old lady at number thirty-three?" Jan asked. "The one that you said you wished had been your grandmother?" Mark nodded. "Turns out she's not so sweet after all. They've found the bodies of thirteen men inside." Mark's mouth fell open. "Apparently, she's been doing it for years. A bit of an amateur taxidermist. She has a man in every room."
Mark shook his head.
"I can't believe it!" he said. "She was so nice."
"Always the quiet ones," the police officer said. Mark recognised him now. He was Mrs Peaks, the librarian's son.
"And to think," Mark said. "She invited me in for a cup of tea last week."
