He had a shark's smile. A mouth full of dangerous-looking teeth. I stepped back, and he stepped forward. I could feel his breath on my face as he chuckled. It smelt faintly of rot, off-meat, compost perhaps. I tried not to gag and stepped back once more.
"You can't escape me," he said, clicking his fingers. I jumped at the sound of the door slamming shut behind me. His chuckle swelled into a full-on belly laugh, and the fear within me threatened to overwhelm me. "You made a deal with the devil," he said, the laughter stopping abruptly. His voice echoed in my head. "You must pay your debt."
I tried to run (where to, I knew not, as the exit behind had been closed to me) but my legs couldn't move. I felt as if I had been suspended in jelly. I was trapped. I was going to have to give in.
Unless...
