Winter Barbecue
and
sesame sticks
…
The snow was deep on the ground when I opened the shutters that morning. Billy was standing in the garden, knee-deep in snow.
"What ya doin', Billy-boy?" I yelled.
He looked up.
"I'm stokin' up the barbie, mate. You coming down to join me?"
I laughed.
"It's nine in the morning. And in case you haven't noticed its winter."
Billy scrapped some snow and ice from what I think was the barbeque.
"Nothing wrong with a winter barbeque," he said. "And nothing tastes better than a breakfast sausage cooked outdoors."
I shrugged and closed the window. It must be minus something out there, I thought, shivering and trying to find the clothes I had discarded quickly before climbing into the warm cocoon of my bed last night. I found most of them - one sock eluded me - and made my way downstairs.
Billy was in the kitchen, now, rummaging about in the cupboards.
"What ya looking for, Billy-Boy?" I asked, scratching my arse through my jeans.
…
"Sesame sticks," Billy replied looking up. "You haven't taken them, have you?"
I paused in my arse-scratching and thought for a moment.
Then, "Why the fuck would I have taken sesame sticks, Billy-boy? And, come to that, why do we even have sesame sticks in the house?"
Billy stared at me for a moment as though he was trying to read my face for proof of truth or lie, then he stuck his head back in the cupboard.
"Jemma bought them," his muffled voice was just clear enough to hear. "I thought they might make an interesting skewer for the sausages."
"Okay," I said. I made my way over to the coffee machine, pleased to see there was enough in the pot for a half a cup.
"Ha!" Billy shouted and then "Ouch!" as he banged his head on the cupboard door as he retreated from it. One hand massaged his head and the other contained a packet of what I assumed were sesame sticks. "Now," Billy said. "Now, we are ready for our breakfast barbeque."
