“What are you reading that’s making you feel like that?” she asked.
“I had Ashir make me an app to search the backwater server for all the files that have my name in it. It brought up nearly 400 results and it started with my pay then went into the emails and memos. I ran one of the transfers houses and helped them traffic humans,” Dru spilled out quickly.
“Wow, that’s a lot to unpack for sure. I think you should probably go slow with how fast you read through all that. You might want to take it slow and give your brain a chance to assimilate the info. I’ve seen a number of vets crack severely after having breakthroughs and that sounds like what you are having now,” Vivian said softly but firmly.
“It’s too hard not to sit here and read through all this. It’s all the parts of my life that I don’t remember after the injuries. It’s been years and I haven’t remembered any of this, I think I deserve to know what I did,” Dru said.
“Look, let me come over and we can talk this over. Maybe go get something to eat to get you away from the screen for a while?” Vivian offered.
“If you want. I just can’t stop reading this. I’ve had a part of me missing for so long now and now it is right here at my finger tips. I’m just scared,” Dru confessed.
“I don’t doubt, it scary to confront those parts of us that we have forgotten, whether by choice or by force, it’s not easy. I’ll be over in a little bit,” Vivian said then, “I’ll see you soon,” and she hung up her phone.
Dru sat with the phone against his ear as it suddenly went silent. He dropped it to his lap and sat staring at the television screen. He read the different results that were displayed and he felt himself fighting the urge to click one. It kept calling him even though he felt it hurt his mind and his soul to know that he had done these things, it was something he needed to know. He wanted to know just how bad of a person he really was and the results were going to tell him.
He looked at the time in the corner of the screen and shook his head, it was after noon and he had done nothing but sit and read about himself. He tossed the remote and keyboard on the chair to his side then stood up, put the phone in his pocket and walked to the kitchen. He filled a glass with water from the tap and guzzled it down quickly, filling it again he drained it a bit more slowly. He set the glass on the counter and opened the fridge to grab the jerky. He opened the package and pulled a long piece from it then closing it he returned it and stood looking vacantly into the fridge.
The image of the house and the people lined up blindfolded and gagged kept filling his vision and he could feel the overwhelming dread rising as he began to understand himself more. If not who he is what he had done, and that scared him, the fact that he did not remember such significant times in his life was not right to him and it was helping to drive his desire to know more.
He snapped back to and closed the fridge door and turned and stood at the counter taking small bites of the jerky and chewing while his mind wandered through the new history of himself he was learning. Soon the jerky was finished and he again became of the room around him. He glanced around the walls and then shook his head.
“No point in sitting in here, I might as well go for a walk or something. She’s right, I need to slow down on the results,” he thought as he walked out of the kitchen. He stopped an looked towards the living room then to the front door. He stood in a indecision for a minute looking back and forth trying to push himself out the door. The call of the results were so strong that they had him held in place such that he couldn’t make himself move.
His pocket vibrated and dinged as he got a message and relieved he pulled it out of his pocket and saw that it was a message from Vivian. He opened it and read, “On my way. Be there in about 15.” He felt a wave of calm wash over him and his heart took a step down in its tone and veracity. He put the phone in his pocket and turned to the front door and closed it behind him as he walked out. The mid day sun shone bright and he walked purposefully towards the street. He hit the sidewalk and stopped, looking to either side then turning back to the house. He had not been on a walk in forever and it was making him start to question who he had become.
Dru stood on the sidewalk in front of his house like wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube man twisting from side to side and his head dropping with each twist. He was slightly aware that he must look like a complete maniac but it felt right at the moment, it was keeping him clam. He turned around and looked back at the house and his eyes wandered to the yard and he noticed Larry’s rock and he got the sudden idea to go and talk to him. He had time before Vivian arrived and he was curious as hell about the stuff the slug had ordered.
Slowly he walked through the yard towards Larry’s rock and when he got within about five or six feet he slowed even more to make sure he didn’t step on Larry or any other life that might be his friends. When just a few feet away he asked in a normal tone and volume, “Larry” You there?” and then waited standing still over the rock.
Larry glared at Gary as he stared in disgust at the holes in his nook. He shook his head and said, “you damn well better figure that thing out. If you shoot another hole in my nook I’ll shoot a hole in you.”
Gary stared at Larry in disbelief at his words. He looked at the holes then back at him and then yelled, “you have no room to bitch. After what you did to me, I don’t think you can say a word. So what if you have a couple little holes in your nook. Poor baby. I have a LOT of big holes in my self esteem after you posting all those videos. The whole world saw me mating for fuck’s sake!”
“There was only a million an change views,” Larry said off hand.
“Shut the fuck up!” Gary yelled at him.
“What?” Larry asked innocently, “that’s not exactly the whole world.”
“Just stop,” Gary said in disgust.
“Look, you know it’s not the easiest thing to wield, just look at the holes in my nook. All I’m saying is that you need some practice with it before you go all gungho attacking random predators,” Larry explained.
“Thanks for your concern but I think I have this. It’s not like it’s rocket science,” Gary retorted.
“It’s a fucking laser, it’s damn well rocket science. It’s even more crazy than rocket science. They had rockets 50 years before lasers you fool,” Larry said mockingly.
“Don’t make me test this on you dumb shit,” Gary said with a sudden scowl and growl in his voice.
Larry stared at him surprised at the sudden change but he pushed it aside and said, “seriously, you need to practice with that before you go firing around willy nilly.”
“Thanks grandma,” Gary said in disgust
