Larry signaled yes again. It annoyed him that the only thing he could do was respond yes, no, and maybe and he felt an idea forming in the back of his brain. Maybe he could make a translator that would be able to connect to a bluetooth speaker that he could talk through. He was lost in the thought and he didn’t hear Dru as he was speaking.
Dru was saying, “the first 50 or so results are just payroll entries, the meat of the stuff starts after that. The results are all in chronological order so it’s easy to build the story from the results.”
Larry snapped back to and tried to piece together what Dru had said. He wasn’t sure how he could make him repeat himself so he turned to Gary and asked, “what did he say? I was lost in a thought.”
Gary gave Larry a glare then replied, “it starts with payroll and goes in chronological order.”
Larry looked back up to Dru and responded yes. He watched Dru raise his eyebrows then give a flat smile and a slight nod.
“If you need I can send you a pic of the notes I have so far. I’m not sure how long we’ll be out so it would allow you to start on it,” Dru said as he stood up.
Larry shook his tentacles before responding yes. It was just easier to agree with everything at this point and he could explain things later. The translator was feeling like a seriously good idea now as the lack of his communication continued. He looked to Gary then back to Dru and with both his tentacles pointed towards his hole, hoping his point would be taken. Dru noticed the motion and nodded in acknowledgment.
“Right, Vivian should be here soon. I’ll talk to you when I get back,” Dru said as he looked up and down the street for her. He looked down at Gary and Larry and gave them a nod then turned and walked towards the house.
They watched him walk away and Gary asked, “you still want to go try these things out?”
Larry watched Dru walk away for a few steps then turned to Gary and replied, “sure. We can find a gopher hole pretty easily. I thought there was one out by the mailbox. I remember seeing it when the election shit was everywhere.”
“Sure, I think I remember that hole. I thought it was a snake hole or something at first but then it got bigger and you could easily see it was a gopher. Thankfully, I’d rather them than snakes,” Gary said with a shudder.
The sound of a car coming up the road interrupted them and they stopped to watch it approach. It stopped in front of Dru’s house and soon Vivian stepped out of the driver’s side. Dru had been standing on the patio bey the front door and was already walking to the car when she parked. She was able to stand up out of the car and Dru said, “hey, let’s get out of here.”
Vivian started at his sudden words as her back was to him but as she turned she asked, “what’s your rush?”
“I just need to get my mind off my past for a bit,” he said as he opened the passenger door to her car. He stood with it open looking at her with his eyebrows slightly raised, waiting for her to okay him entering the car. It took her a bit but she finally figured out what he was doing and motioned with her head then slid into the driver’s seat and closed the door.
Dru climbed into the car and closed the door behind him. He fastened his seatbelt out of respect for Vivian then turned to her and asked, “so where we going?”
She started the car again and then turned her head to him and said, “I was figuring we could go to lunch. I know a nifty cafe near town and we can get a table out of the way and talk.”
