“As long as you think you can handle learning that much that quick. I really think you would be good to read a couple points a day, that way you have time to process it. I’m just trying to keep you from blowing up your head,” Vivian said after taking a drink from her glass.
“That’s a concern I have but I’m also not wanting to prolong this. It feels like I’m torturing myself if I draw it out for too long.”
“Instant gratification is a problem that human have really got to learn to deal with. You don’t have to know it all right away. Sometimes it is far better to take things slowly,” she said with a raise of her eyebrows.
Dru took a drink from his glass then said, “I’ve always been a bit impulsive but this feels different. Haven’t you ever had something that you just had to know?”
“Yes, but not something about myself. And not something that might make my psyche break if I learn it all at once.”
Dru scrunched his face then said with a slightly hurt tone, “well, Ive got to know. I really need to get this over with. Now that I know that I have the answers to my missing pieces of my life and I need to know now. Why should I wait to remember who I am?”
“I get it, but I’m just trying to give you a different perspective. I don’t want you to hurt yourself. The mind can be a touchy thing to play with and it’s not always black and white. I just want you to be careful is all,” Vivian said. As she finished the waiter returned with their meals.
Setting their plates before them the waiter asked if they needed anything else to with they replied no and he quickly left them to their food. They made small talk as they both dove into their food. Dru had a cup of beer cheese soup and a club sandwich while Vivian ordered a southwest shrimp and steak salad. They spoke little while they ate and Dru noted how hungry he was as he quickly finished his meal. Vivian soon pushed her plate aside and looked back up at him.
“That was good. I haven’t had beer cheese soup in years. Yours was good?” he asked.
“Delicious, it’s one of my regular dishes here. I’m here usually once a week,” she replied.
Dru again looked around the small room and focused momentarily on each table of people. Of the four other occupied tables three of them held couples and the last was a pair of men dressed in suits. He looked back to Vivian and asked, “lot of government employees eat here?” then motioned slightly with his head towards the table with the two men.
Vivian glanced in their direction then back to Dru and said, “there’s always at least one table of them in here. Pretty sure they are secret service but not positive.”
Dru finished his drink and set it on the table then looked out the window. He felt uncomfortable being around them now, there was something too familiar and he could feel that pinch of the tight collar around his neck. He had hated having to wear a tie, especially when on missions, it seemed utterly ridiculous and totally impractical.
