Gary and Larry watched the car disappear from sight and as it did Gary said, “come on, let’s go find that hole and give these things a try.”
“Sure,” Larry said then, “head for the mailbox.”
Gary lead and they wound their way through the yard towards the mailbox while he expounded at length about his excitement for the laser. Larry followed behind and half listened to him ramble on as his mind was focused on what Dru had said. He knew that he should be starting taking notes on the results but they both needed to test their gear so it could wait a while.
The mailbox soon loomed overhead and they headed straight to the edge of the mound of dirt expelled by the gopher. Gary stopped and let Larry catch up then asked, “you ready for this?”
“You’re going in first since you have the laser. And you damn well better not hit me with it,” Larry said sharply.
Gary gave him a glare then continued on up the mound of dirt and as he crested the top Larry began to follow. Once at the crest himself Larry looked around the entrance to the hole and he could see the distinct tracks of a lizard with the tail drag line.
Gary had made it right to the entrance to the hole and he yelled back, “you coming or what?”
Larry looked back to the lizard tracks then at Gary and said, “I guess. You better be ready, it looks like a lizard has been in there. It might still be.”
Gary looked to where Larry had and he saw the tracks finally. He looked back at Larry and his eyes were wide. After a pause he said with a slight shake to his voice, “yeah, good call.”
Larry left the crest of the mound and headed down to Gary at the entrance. When he got next to him he said, “okay, let’s go. I will have the camera going and you just focus on not shooting me. Let’s see if the thing was worth all the effort.”
Gary took a moment then slowly moved through the entrance into the darkness of the hole. He worked his way down the wall to the floor of the tunnel that ran parallel to the ground above. As he pulled his foot from the wall he looked either direction and saw nothing within the short distance visible in the dark.
Larry soon was in the tunnel and once he was next to Gary he asked, “which way? Seems it probably doesn’t matter too much. We can just explore and see what’s here.”
Gary looked both directions again then chose the left and he began to slowly work his way away from the entrance. The light shining in the hole illuminated the tunnel for a short ways but as they moved away from it the darkness enveloped them. Gary stopped and asked, “you have the camera going right?”
“Yeah it’s been going since we entered,” Larry replied.
