The bright glow of the opening was like a wall and as they both slugged as fast as they could into it they suddenly began to glow in the light. It refracted in their now profuse slime that was oozing rapidly from their effort and fright and shone beams of lights like a disco ball around the tunnel in both directions. The centipedes saw the lights flashing around the tunnel and slowed their chaotic movement. Larry heard the change in their motion and he said quickly, “go, they’re slowing. Get out of here, up, go!”
Gary heard him and without a glance he turned to his right and climbed the wall at full speed. Larry followed and soon Gary had crested the wall and pulled himself into the light of the surface and Larry was soon next to him. They turned around and looked over the edge into the hole and tunnels and they could see the writhing legs of the centipedes as they skittered into and out of the light halo below.
“That was fucked!” Gary said in exasperation.
“Why didn’t you get in more test shots? You could have at least got a sense of how it handles,” Larry admonished him.
“I’m not used to it yet. It’s not like I had a camera in my mantle for months like someone else I know. That would make this no problem but I have to get my body to learn to keep it in place and to aim. Like you were perfect right off the bat.”
Larry chuckled and said, “you’re right. It takes a while to get used to the feeling of it in there but it gets better soon. You just need to get back into the fray and try the thing out. You won’t know till you fire it a few times.”
