And I attended the meal. Little is it known that I, John the Baptist, knew beforehand that our Lord would leave this world after that supper.
His prior confession troubled me, but I wept in silence. I only admired afterwards how he washed our feet, and then offered us bread and wine. His words always denoted a peace that was more filling than any food or drink. None of the apostles knew exactly what the future would bring, but at least he would never abandon us.
Among the faith I have, I only want it to be enough to erase from my memory when his face saddened and he said to us with emotion:
"In all truth I tell you, one of you is going to betray me."
I hope still to clear the name of Him who loved with Passion even his enemies. I declare, truly, that with my feet I left that dinner, but it never left my mind.
