Eso era lo que mi madre me gritaba casi todos los días, además de la pregunta:
—¿Sabes para qué sirve?
Pero a mí sus palabras me entraban por un oído y me salían por el otro. Yo solo me concentraba en el proceso que estaba haciendo.
Cuando era niño, armaba mis bloques de LEGO: naves espaciales, aviones, monstruos. Ya en la universidad me fajaba programando para que aquel sistema en Cobol o RPG diera los resultados esperados en el menor tiempo posible.
Y mientras tanto, desde algún rincón de la casa, siempre aparecía la misma voz:
—¡Use the soap!
Cuando me independicé, pensé que me aliviaría de eso, pero no. Qué vaina con uno, que busca a toda costa ser adulto cuando es niño, y cuando por fin sales de la casa de tus padres para tener la tuya propia, llegas y te casas.
Que alguien me explique dónde está la independencia.
Pues de casado, la bendita frase también rebotaba en las paredes:
—¡Usa el jabón!
Ahora, ya viejo, divorciado, solo e “independiente”, soy yo quien se lo dice todos los días frente al espejo:
—¡Usa el jabón! Ve a bañarte antes de que corten el agua.
Así es la vida y así han sido mis cinco minutos.

INDEPENDENCE
"Use the soap!"
That was what my mother used to yell at me almost every single day, right before asking:
"—Do you even know what it's for?"
But her words went in one ear and out the other. I was completely focused on whatever I was doing.
As a kid, I would build my LEGO sets: spaceships, airplanes, monsters. Later in college, I would bust my tail programming so that those COBOL or RPG systems would deliver the expected results in the shortest time possible.
And meanwhile, from some corner of the house, that same voice would always appear:
"—¡Use the soap!"
When I moved out on my own, I thought I’d finally be free of it, but no. What a joke life is—we desperately want to be adults when we're kids, and when you finally leave your parents' house to have your own place, you go and get married.
Someone, please, explain to me where the independence is.
Because once I was married, that blessed phrase kept bouncing off the walls too:
"—Use the soap!"
Now, old, divorced, alone, and "independent," I’m the one saying it to myself every day in front of the mirror:
"—Use the soap! Go take a shower before they shut off the water."
That’s life, and those have been my five minutes.
