Bottomless Pit
You know you’re falling down an bottomless pit when the politicians in charge of deposing the cruelest, most corrupt, and most inept regime in our history are as corrupt and inept as those in power.
The cruel part may be subject to consideration just because these politicians, who theoretically are opposed to the government, have not killed or tortured anyone directly. However, considering that their ineptitude, internal divisions, populist discourse, and corruption has prolonged the agony of a whole nation, allowed the exodus to reach 6 million people, and allowed the death of thousands of innocents and the imprisonment of hundreds, they may pretty much deserve the appellative too.
In the name of plurality and unity, they accepted the “support” of people who, even without a background check, would have raised red flags, to say the least. Didn’t they know that one of their liaisons in Colombia was a General who had been accused of drug trafficking and is now in prison in the USA? Didn’t they know that the Attorney General they accepted as the legitimate representative of their interim government was as corrupt and responsible for crimes against humanity as any other government official? She, too, should be in prison already. Didn’t they know that many of their consular representatives in many of the supporting countries had clear links to the mafia they were supposed to oust?
You know you’re falling down a bottomless pit when, after 20 years, some representative of the International Criminal Court tells you that there are still no suspects, that the process should not be politicized, and that the independent investigation they will conduct will take time and will require the collaboration of the regime that for 20 years have been committing crimes and destroying evidence. Maybe we should run some background checks of the allegedly independent investigators.
