Maynia -- Day Four -- 1,138 words
Driving away from the carwash, I glanced in time at my rearview mirror to see Dr. Luke shaking his head in amusement at the huge grin that his friend sported on his face. Focusing my gaze back on the road, I also couldn’t help the small smile that grazed my lips at seeing the easy camaraderie those two had with each other. Childhood friends growing up together, huh?
My small smile suddenly turned into a frown as I let out a huff of breath. I shouldn’t get too close, this is all just temporary after all..
Having that bitter thought however didn’t stop me from comparing the two attractive men with each other; Dr. Lucas Bliant, with his blond hair and kind grey eyes, looked like your typical Prince Charming come to life. In short, the type of guy you wouldn’t mind introducing to your parents, plus being a doctor would help in building him up. Though I’ve yet to know what he specializes in..
Mr. Zephyr Clancy was a whole new league however; whereas Dr. Luke had that broad-shouldered build of a swimmer, Mr. Clancy seems to work out a lot more, judging from his bulging biceps that couldn’t be hidden by his shirt uniform. But it was his eyes that got me.
Despite the light humor those hazel-brown eyes seemed to have expressed, I glimpse upon something deeper—buried behind the guise of being laidback and trying to be funny. His cropped hair also didn’t help in hiding the almost invisible scars down his nape, nor his slightly torn right ear. Not that it made him any less attractive, in fact it added to his overall rugged appeal. I added as an afterthought, wondering how his russet-colored buzz would feel through my fingers.
Suddenly, rustling from Jaden’s carrier broke me out of my nearly lewd thoughts as I made a quick glance towards the passenger’s seat. “What’s wrong buddy, you hungry?” I took his persistent mewling as a yes as I glanced down the mostly secluded road and thought of pulling over.
Seeing as the road only went straight from here and spying no nearby obstructions, I reached into my handbag and rifled through in search for the pack of kibble sticks I purchased from Dr. Bliant’s clinic. After a couple of seconds with no results, I momentarily took my eyes off the road and found that the said package had fallen to the floor.
Now thinking of pulling over, I gazed back up just in time to quickly step on the brakes. The sudden break in motion had me automatically reaching over to steady Jaden’s carrier, his loud ‘mrow’ causing me to give him a quick once-over.
Finding him fine but now a little grouchy, I steadily looked out my windshield and surveyed my surroundings. A couple of houses dotted the road but they were far in between, it was impossible for anyone to hide that fast. Slowly glancing at my rearview mirror to check for any signs of life from behind, I already had my hand inching towards the top of my boot for my silver knife when—
I tensed at the sound of my phone ringing.
Still keeping my hand on the handle of my weapon, I left my phone to make a couple more rings before deciding to put it on loudspeaker. “Hey doll, just wanted to know where you are right at the moment?” The cheery voice of Ms. Chip surrounding the confined space of my car seemed to have provided a sense of calm as I visibly relaxed, and Jaden even started purring and rubbing his head at the grilled entrance of his carrier.
Adjusting the strap of my seatbelt, I continued on driving as I replied, “Just.. got distracted. I was planning to drop Jaden off there before heading to the Mayor’s.” Confirming the time on my console proved I still had a good hour to spare.
“Ah that’s great! There’s actually been a slight glitch in today’s schedule, but there’s someone here to make it up to you!” I barely registered what Ms. Chip said as I kept my senses alert on my surroundings, while trying to make sense of what I saw a few seconds ago.
At this point in my life, I’ve learned not to shrug things off as a trick of the mind. And I sure as hell know, I just saw my mom.
I knew something was amiss the moment I saw a blue Ford Ranger parked in my driveway, parking right next to it, I then saw Ms. Chip on our porch sitting area smiling cheekily at a man who had his back towards me. I only got the chance to notice his short raven-hair and broad back before Ms. Chip already drew her attention towards me as I got out of my car with Jaden in his carrier in tow.
“There’s my lil’ Shiela! What’d I tell you sheriff, ain’t she a sight for sore eyes?” Ms. Chip kept on talking as she made her way towards me. Sheriff huh? Amusedly, I thought that Ms. Chip was up to her old flirty tricks again, before I finally caught the pair of deep blue eyes regarding me coolly.
“She’s a sight alright. It’s a pleasure to meet such a beauty as yourself, Ms. Shiela.” The sheriff remarked as he stopped by Ms. Chip’s side and offered his hand. I noticed the assessing look in his eyes was now gone, replaced with a look of professionalism, but the slight tick on his angular jaw gave away his apparent displeasure.
Catching the flash of his badge attached to his belt strap, I offered him a sickly sweet smile as I took his hand for a shake then said, “It’s a pleasure to be regarded in such a way in the Town of Samheinrock.”
“I always thought my father was quite aggressive in his way of finding investors for our humble town, but right now I think he’s met his match.” I noticed the way he narrowed his eyes at me as he held my hand a little tighter, before letting go.
“Ah.. Shiela darling, let me properly introduce you to Mayor Heins’ son, Sheriff Jackson Heins.” This time, Ms. Chip butted in as she took Jaden from my hand, flitting her gaze awkwardly between me and Sheriff Heins.
Hmm.. That partly explains his disgusto towards me.. I thought as I stared at him unfazed, still trying to keep the sweet smile on my face. God, this is gonna cramp my face muscles..
Still regarding me in his own way, he then cleared his throat as he almost rubbed his nape in frustration, before just settling with awkwardly pointing at his pick-up, “Ms. Shiela, I’m here to personally escort you to the Mayor’s Office.”
