Two Means To An End - ZAPFIC50 FRIDAY (3/27/26) | Prompt: appendix (apéndice)

Hope all are healthy and safe this week as it's time for the ZAPFIC50 Friday challenge. This challenge by Hive account@felt-buzz presented the opportunity to explore the prompt "appendix" that is told in exactly fifty (50) words. When one thinks of the appendix, images of your anatomy springs to mind. It's an organ in your body that helps support your gut health. It's useful to avoid clutter and clean out your abdomen, but not essential to live.

Another definition of the word is used in the business arena. An appendix is a supplementary document that supports your main body of work. Again, it's useful as an explanatory tool, but not essential and is placed at the end to avoid cluttering the main text.

I combine both definitions into my flash fiction story. Hope you enjoy.

My story is below:

Andrew stretched, stopping midway. "Hurts all over. Lower back. Nausea. Vomiting," he complained.

"Maybe you've caught a bug."

"Can't finish this project without support." Grimacing, where's the appendix?"

Puzzled, Monica responded, "lower abdomen, right side."

He grinned. "One inside; One outside. Both helpful, but not essential."

Gut and Project uncluttered.

Espero que todos estén bien y a salvo esta semana, ya que ha llegado el momento del reto del viernes de ZAPFIC50. Este reto, propuesto por Hive account@felt-buzz, nos ha brindado la oportunidad de explorar el tema «apéndice», que debe desarrollarse en exactamente cincuenta (50) palabras. Cuando uno piensa en el apéndice, le vienen a la mente imágenes de la anatomía. Es un órgano del cuerpo que contribuye a la salud intestinal. Es útil para evitar el desorden y limpiar el abdomen, pero no es esencial para vivir.

En el ámbito empresarial se utiliza otra definición de la palabra. Un apéndice es un documento complementario que respalda el cuerpo principal del trabajo. De nuevo, es útil como herramienta explicativa, pero no es esencial y se coloca al final para evitar saturar el texto principal.

He combinado ambas definiciones en mi relato de ficción breve. Espero que lo disfrutéis.

Dos caminos hacia un mismo fin

Andrew se estiró y se detuvo a mitad de camino. «Me duele todo. La zona lumbar. Náuseas. Vómitos», se quejó.

«Quizá hayas cogido un virus»."

«No puedo terminar este proyecto sin ayuda». Haciendo una mueca, «¿dónde está el apéndice?».

Desconcertada, Mónica respondió: «En la parte baja del abdomen, en el lado derecho».

Él sonrió. «Uno dentro; otro fuera. Ambos útiles, pero no imprescindibles».

Intestino y proyecto despejados.
