Warm sun rays poured through the slightly opened window into Eric's room when he heard the doorbell. He was sad because his pet Labrador had gone missing. "Eric, get the door," his father ordered, looking grim for the same reason.
Eric opened the door to his friends, Tyler and Tucker, the troublesome identical twins in the neighbourhood. He sighed at the look of mischief on their faces.
"I can't…", he was starting to say when his father called from the kitchen. "Son, who is it?"
"It's Tyler and Tucker, Dad."
"Good, good. Let them in."
"You see?" Tyler patted Eric on the shoulder like he was speaking to a boy younger than him when the three boys were just shy of their twelfth birthday. "Your dad knows how important we are."
Tucker rolled his eyes and pushed past his twin into the living room just as Mr Grayson came out of the kitchen. "Boys, I'm glad you are here," he said. "Jossy is missing. We can't find her anywhere. Will you join Eric and I to search the woods?"
"Sure, Mr Grayson." Tucker replied and they all set out into the woods in search of the dog. Eric was a little sad that he could not go swimming with his friends like they had planned because of Jossy. But what if they never find her? He knew he would hate to lose his pet dog.
They passed by Miles Ryder's old house. Tyler suggested they stop to look around the house because Miles Ryder had moved out many years ago. The house was old and overgrown with weeds around it. Tucker climbed up a tree that jutted inside the fence.
"What do you see?" Tyler called out.
"Um, it's still empty. But I think I see Jossy behind some big cans…."
Some whiny sounds came from a section of the house. Mr Grayson raised his hand to halt the boys' chatter. "Did you hear that?"
"I think so. Jossy?" Eric shouted and Jossy whined louder. Mr Grayson told the boys to stay put but the twins begged to be allowed to climb the fence and fetch the dog.
After a few minutes inside the fence, Tyler and Tucker carried Jossy out of Miles Ryder's house. The dog had broken one of its legs.
Mr Grayson told the boys to go have fun while he took Jossy to the vet doctor. Eric was so relieved he burst into laughter. "Let's go for a swim!"
The boys howled like wolves playfully, their voices echoing in the woods as they raced down to the stream. They removed their shirts on the way in excitement.
Getting to the bank, they screamed, hurled themselves into the air and fell into the water simultaneously with big splashes.
