Ashley cuddled Mario in her arms. "Is Mario going to be okay?" She asked her mom, Annie Edevane, with pitiful eyes.
It was a sunny afternoon. Mario was one of the four puppies his mother had and Ashley loved all the puppies that she named each one of them. Mrs Annie Edevane had promised to give one puppy to her best friend, Karen. Ashley begged her not to.
Karen smiled and scooched down so she could be at the same height as Ashley. She smoothed Ashley's cheek with the back of her hand. "Don't worry Ashley. Mario is going to be fine with me. I'll make him my best friend, okay?"
Ashley nodded. "He likes his milk first thing in the morning," she advised.
"Ah. Good to know!" Karen chuckled, cuddled Mario in her hands and left with him.
That evening as the Edevane family relaxed in front of the TV, Ashley sitting cosily between her parents on the sofa, they heard scratching and whimpering noise at the door.
"It cannot be!" Annie exclaimed but Ashley jumped off the sofa in excitement to open the door. "Mario is back home!" She shrieked.
The small puppy wagged his tails as he hopped in. Annie stared at Mario in amazement. She picked up her phone and called her friend, Karen.
"I'm beside myself with worry looking for him," Karen confessed.
Annie could not help laughing at her friend. "I guess you will have to come for Mario in the night when it's all dark so he can't find his way back home."
"Definitely. I'll come by tomorrow night then." Karen said and their phone call ended. Annie patted Mario's head. "You are one smart puppy!"
