She stared right at me with a grin on her face. Intimidating but playful. I laughed. "Yes, don't you trust me no more?" She nodded slowly. Reluctantly. Then took the gift from my hand. "See? I told you. Now unwrap. Nothing up my sleeve."
To be fair, it was not her fault. I have pranked her before with those exploding gift boxes so her hesitation made sense. Every time, I somehow convince her to take it anyway. She never learns or maybe she just hopes. But today was different I didn't intend no tricks. She started unwrapping, eyes on me. "I am giving you the benefit of the doubt. Just this last time and not again."
I smiled and waited.
She unwrapped the box almost dropped it and then paused. Her face softened with that gentle smile I don't see often. It was that one gaming machine. The one she always stops to look at whenever we pass that electronics store downtown. She looked at me. Then back at the machine. Then at me again. No words just that smile.
