Greetings All
Only a short update for today. I was thinking of joining it with the following section but then realised that it would be way too long. So, I hope all of you enjoy this shorter than normal update!
Pura had taken the time to travel to Myla’s planet before the woman could join him. He desperately needed to speak to Saita’s family about what was happening. He needed their aid in his decision. What he had not expected was to see Doran with the old king and queen. He seemed to be arguing with them about something, or at least with Myla as Karesh was just staring out the window and not engaging.
“I don’t care. He can hang me, but I am not leaving her there.”
“Doran just…”
“I didn’t spend four years of my life looking for her to turn my back on her now. I don’t care what was decreed. I am going to fetch her and bring her home.”
“And then what? She has to live in secret and hope she isn’t reported. Hope that your family isn’t reported. Leave well enough alone, Doran.” shouted Myla in return.
“She is your daughter! How can you be so callous!”
“It was a royal decree.”
“Fuck the royal decree.”
“If I may. Before this gets more heated.” interrupted Pura.
Doran turned and instead of going pale-faced he only stared at the King defiantly. He literally no longer cared.
“I suppose you have heard then?”
“Saita is on the Saith planet. They are going to kill her!” snapped Doran. “And you are all sitting here as if this is just another day. How can you call yourselves her family?”
Silence echoed in the room. Myla nervously clutched at her arm and looked to where Karesh was sitting and looking out the window. “I need to protect the family I have left.”
Doran had another retort prepared but Pura stepped in and said. “I have spoken to the Queen of the Saith. Saasha seems to have taken a liking to Saita. She is safe, protected, and no one is going to harm her so please can we calm down.”
“How is she?” asked Doran.
“Looks like she has seen better days, but she is alive and doing well according to the Queen.”
“Why is she there?”
Pura was a little concerned that Karesh and Myla were not asking any questions, but he was not going to push them. He would, however, answer Doran’s questions. “From what I understand she is competing in the Saith Games. Seems she clawed her way through several fighting ranks to get to this point. She is an S-class fighter now.”
“Good girl!” cheered Doran. “I knew she had it in her to survive. So? Are we going to go get her?”
Pura frowned and said. “I have been invited to go to the Saith home world to see the Saith Games as Saita represents us as a species.”
“Why do you look so unhappy?”
“Because I was given an ultimatum.” Pura sighed and added. “Either I take the girl back or the Saith make use of her.”
“Take her back! How is it such a difficult task for the three of you?” frustration lanced Doran’s words. “It is clear you believe you made a terrible mistake. Myla doesn’t even have the courage to move from the palace and Karesh hasn’t said a word since Saita put him in a coma. Or are you scared of losing face?”
“Doran, please.” Pura finally snapped. “Can I have a moment with Myla and Karesh?”
“No! The last time there were family decisions made without discussion you threw an innocent, broken woman out into the cold with no regard for what she had been through. I will not be silenced! Not again. This time I am not going to use a brewery to be brave enough to say what I need to. Either you go get the girl or I do.”
Silence echoed and Doran looked Pura straight in the eye with defiance. The King didn’t know what to do or what to say. It was clear that this anger had been brewing in Doran for years and he was not going to let it go. He was willing to risk the lives of his family and himself to bring Saita back. Pura couldn’t help but wonder how many other humans felt the same way after Saita had rid them of their mad king. He looked up at Myla, she carried so much guilt for how she had reacted with Saita the last time they spoke. She hadn’t even had a chance to say goodbye before the girl left. Karesh’s heart carried even more guilt. He had uttered no words since those he had used against Saita. It was not a physical injury but rather one of guilt and he was not going to recover unless he got to see Saita. However, there was a problem with that. Would Saita even want to see any of them?
“I will take you and Myla to the planet with me. We will see Saita fight in the Games and then we will decide. I have spoken to my advisors, and they feel that perhaps the girl has been punished far too severely. If she can somehow broker a peace treaty, then that is more than enough of a feat to redeem herself.”
Doran’s face lit up with a smile, it was the first time in months that a smile had been on his face. Myla, however, looked at her husband and frowned deeply. “I can’t leave Karesh on his own.”
Karesh snorted, kicked away the window, and then made his way to a desk that was littered with scraps of paper and envelopes. He seemed to be digging around a little before finding what he was looking for. He returned to Myla’s side, put a thick envelope in her hand then returned to his seat to stare outside again.
“And that?” asked Pura.
Myla turned the envelope over and said. “It’s addressed to Saita.”
This letter hangs around for some time and in fact takes up almost a chapter itself with what Karesh has to say to Saita. However, this only appears much later in this book.
The writing of the next book seems to going well. I'm enjoying writing about Bolx's time, but it is challenging writing about his Saita as she is far more different from the one I first developed.
Anyway, I hope you all enjoyed today's update! There is another inbound later int the week, and another introduction chapter later over the weekend. See you all then!
For those of you just joining us, please note that this the third book in the Fell Dragon series. Follow this link to read the two earlier books:
