Greetings Readers.
The uploads are doing weird things, so no picture of Cupcake today. The present project that took most of my time is mostly done, but I still have a few things to fix here and there as the client has become rather picky.
Anyway, Cupcake had a good vet visit yesterday, and she is doing great today as temperatures are starting to increase at last. However, didn't expect the 30 degrees C to hit us this hard at the end of winter. Summer is going to be a doozy!
Anyway, today's update has the rest of the romantic build-up between Jethron and his wife, and there is even a small surprise for Saita. I hope you all enjoy!
“Mistress.”
A voice hissed in the darkness, disturbing her slumber. She instantly felt the white-hot fury erupt in her belly. Or was it hunger? It was so difficult to tell as time went on.
“What?” she muttered as she pulled blankets over her head.
“The Old One is making a move.”
She opened her eye but remained under the blanket, “What?”
“The Old One has made another.”
“Here we go again.” She grumbled as she pushed the blanket from her.
She rubbed at her painful head; it had been some time since she was last awake. Once her blurred vision cleared, she looked at the ceiling of her room. Room? No, prison cell. All around her were pipes and wires, each playing a role in keeping her trapped in this hell. The light that illuminated the area was a dull red, it was meant to aid the night vision of the Wolven, but it only infuriated her.
“What and when Red-One?” she said as sat up to move her feet to the floor.
The floor was cold, it had been some time since she had felt cold. The power of the cage was starting to fade. It had kept her safe for a long time but was now running out of energy. The Wolven were getting less and less, unable to power it as they once had.
She listened as the red-eyed Wolven explained the fight. It irritated her. If he had been successful in killing the new Fell Dragon, she would have to go hungry again. She was tired of going hungry. She cracked the fingers on her right hand followed by those on the left. The Wolven instantly fell silent.
“Must you starve me, Red-Eye?”
“No Mistress.”
“Then why kill my replacement?”
The Wolven whined and sat down on his haunches, “Mistress wants energy, we went looking for energy. Didn’t realise till too late.”
“Come here, Red-Eye.” She indicated that she wanted to cross the threshold into her chambers.
The Wolven whined and didn’t move. Irritation grated on her nerves. He knew what she could do with a simple touch, he had been here from the start and had seen many of his brethren fall. She looked up at him and noted his fear, he wasn’t going to come close to her, but he would offer something.
“Another saw.” He exclaimed quickly.
She grinned, “Bring them then.”
The Wolven scampered off quickly, only to return with a younger Wolven by the scruff of the neck. This one had barely been augmented, nothing more than a pup. It looked petrified.
“Tell her!” Demanded Red-Eye.
“Mistress…” it whined.
She looked Red-Eye in his remaining organic eye and indicated that someone needed to enter her room. Red-Eye, not wanting to be sacrificed, threw the pup through the doorway. For a split second, the barrier glimmered, and then the pup flew through it.
Red-Eye watched as the Fell Dragon approached the pup to lift him to look her in the eye. She cupped her hands behind its head and held him steady. He was bigger than her but was cowering, with his ears flattened against his head. She gently placed its forehead against hers and closed her eyes. The pup’s eyes grew wide in terror before a piercing scream left his mouth. It was cut off by a crunch as the Fell Dragon dug her fingers into its skull. She then started to hum a little, and almost dance with the limp Wolven. She paused for a second and dropped the corpse, except it wasn’t a corpse. Dull eyes looked up at her and the pup whined.
“Get.” She snapped and indicated to the door with her head.
The young Wolven scrambled to his four paws and fled as if his life depended on it.
“Interesting.” Said the Fell Dragon as she rubbed at her aching head. “Not what I expected.”
“Mistress?”
The Fell Dragon walked toward the Wolven who shied away from her. She tested the barrier which kept her trapping in this room. It firmly resisted her, but the sting was much less than it had been since the last time she had tested it. How long ago was that? Snorting, she returned to the bed. She sat down and peered at the old Wolven through a single-slitted eye. “The pup is fine. Blind but fine, have the useless eyes replaced.”
“And the other?”
“Oh, I doubt she’s dead. And there’s a son. I will eat well.”
She lay back on the bed and set her hands under her head. “Now, for the last time, don’t wake me until that barrier has fallen. Or I’ll take all of your sight next time.”
She closed her only eye and dreamed of devouring not only her replacement but those who called themselves the first. Once she had them, there would be nothing to get in her way. As sleep claimed her once more, there was a smile playing at the corner of her mouth.
