This is my post for #freewriters 2287 prompt pair of losers hosted by
I do a lot of venting about my husband's ways, but him, as a decent human, I would never have anything to vent about and I wonder where I would be without him. We have been together for 40 years, and this year will be 38 married, some days I need to walk away, and some days I do not want him out of my sight.
The one thing we are not is a pair of losers, in our 40 years together, we have had many jobs all working together so we could keep a roof over our 5 children and our heads.
We started out harvesting wild clams from the river, we would get overboard in waist-deep water and feel them with our feet and one by one put them in a basket. We could pay the bills by doing this.
Next we got the owner of Judahs fish house to let us use his row flatties with nets and his old motorboat. We did this until we made enough money to have this boat built. My husband caught these fish the day after we were married.
We fished the ocean until 3 years after the Florida Net Ban and found out we could not make a living fishing offshore.
We applied for a clam lease on the river and grew clams. We bought them when they were the size of beach sand and when they got to 8mm in size we put them in what we call grow-out bags and planted them on the bottom of the river. We made the most money we had ever had doing this, then the river crashed, and the entire ecosystem from algae to manatees, dolphins, fish, oysters, clams, etc died, we lost 50K in clams.
We are back fishing, but we also started a plant nursery and had plant yard sales, we did very well doing this but we can not sell at our house so we had to haul plants to other places, it got to be too much on us so now we only grow areca palms.
But now there is another type of hedge plant that people are buying, it grows faster, so I do not know how well we will do on the areca palms this spring, but I do know there will be some other way he will come up with for us to still make a living, this I have Faith in him doing.
