This is my post for #freewriters 2290 prompt 5 day hike hosted by .
My husband has been wanting to go speck fishing, specks are freshwater fish and I have never caught one. My husband said he had not caught many of them. He wanted to go to Lake Garcia.
I spent yesterday collecting worms to catch a catfish or bream if the specks were not biting. My husband stopped at a bait shop and bought Missouri Minnows to fish with.
I was the first to get a bait in the water and the first to catch a fish, but it was the wrong fish and too small.
There was no shortage of airboats going by us.
We were glad they kept their distance, it was cold with a north wind and I did not want to get wet.
Airboats are nice because you can cross the water lilies with no problems. But if you get stranded in the marsh, you would not want to make the 5 day hike back to the boat ramp.
We pulled into this spot to fish and things became very exciting. A huge gator came barreling off her nest and came up under our boat making huge boils, I think she was very upset at us. You can see where she crawls to and from it, it is at
the bottom left of this photo.
My husband did catch a nice bass but then informed me that keeping them was against the law.
It was 3 in the afternoon and we had not caught a speck, so my husband was ready to go home. We get back to the boat ramp and he goes for the truck. It is taking him forever to bring the truck to the ramp, after we get it pulled out he tells me what was going on.
He sticks the key in the driver's door but it will not open, so he goes to the passenger side and tries it. It does not want to open, he keeps messing with it and finally gets it open. He has to crawl across the seat, it has bucket seats with a center console. He gets in his seat and puts the key in the ignition, the truck will not start. He tries to open the door, but it is still locked and will not unlock by the handle, he keeps, I am sure by now, not so gently yanking on the door handle and it comes unlocked.
He gets out opens the hood and wiggles the battery cables, one of them was loose. The truck starts, he gets it backed down the ramp, and we get pulled out and on our way home.
We were about 5 miles from home and one of the boat trailer tires sounded as if we were getting a flat, but it was much worse, the bearings went out. We were on the main road so he pulled off to a side road and we got out to look at it. I asked what were we going to do and he said he was going to try to make it to his brother's house which was about 2 miles away.
I was so scared that the tire was going to fall off and then we would be in a bigger mess, but once again God was watching out for us and we made it to his brother's house.
He got his brother to run him to our house so he could get the tools he needed and an extra hub and bearings. We pulled into our driveway just as the sun was going down.
My husband said he is never fishing that lake again, we fished it one time before, and on the way home, the radiator hose busted. He also said that this is not the worst fishing trip we have had, we have had worse days.
