This is my post for #freewriters Saturday prompt walk on both sides hosted by
The photo is of a box of fishing lures that my husband and I got out of birds that would show up at the fish house when we were clearing our nets. If we saw a bird with a hook or lure in it we would wave a fish in the air until the bird got close enough and the other one of us would grab the bird.
It took both of us to get the hooks out of them, one to hold the bird's beak and hold it down and the other with wire cutters to cut the hook's barb and back the hook out. After getting the hooks out we always gave the bird a fish to eat.
Every one of these hooks and lures was lost by sport fishermen, the same people who were saying that commercial fishermen are rapers of the sea and cared nothing about the wildlife. They walk on both sides. Blaming us for killing the wildlife while they break their line when a bird grabs their bait. They would rather break it off than take the time to slowly reel the bird in and get their hooks out of it.
The bird flies off with a long piece of line and when they land in the trees, the line tangles around the branches, and the bird can not fly off. It stays there until it starves to death. If you go fishing and a bird grabs your bait, please think about this and do the right thing or try your best.
