In one of the days during the period of our observational posting as nursing students, a little boy was rushed to the pediatrics emergency ward the particular department where we were posted. The little boy who was in a great excruciating pain was brought in. Yea it was a deep knife laceration secondary to a domestic accident.
without wasting any time, the nurse conducted her initial assessment which involves the nurse checking air way, breathing , circulation, vital signs, and pain management by administering suitable analgesics.
The emergency nurse went further to control the bleeding and then gently cleaned the wound with normal saline to remove debris and reduce the risk of infection. she went further to assess the wound and as well dressed it with sterile dressing and bandage from the CSSD (Center for Sterile Supply Department) to protect the wound and prevent further contamination.
After some minutes, the nurse monitored for shock, in which there was non in this case. The nurse prepared for surgical intervention here. Then the wound was evaluated by the available surgeon for potential repair under anesthesia.
The nurse also went further to assess the patient's tetanus immunization status. But it happened that the patient's , immunization was unclear so she just had to administer it to avoid any unnecessary story of infection.
That was how this lovely emergency nurse handled this situation and restored hope to the family and as well to the innocent boy.
it takes a lot to be a health practitioner and I am proud to be in the journey of becoming one!
