Este camino largo, este camino corto
camino de Dios
por la vida que hemos hecho
--con certeza, ni sabemos--
este camino largo de la garganta angosta
este camino corto amanecido en bondad
estos pies de isleño
tengo por esos caminos célibes
sin un puñado de risas
con todo el viento en el pecho
con la camisa sin madre
este camino tiento con los pies de padre e hijo
--bien no sabemos--
si Dios, si la vida,
si atajar por la vereda
si adjudicarnos el trecho.
Este camino largo, camino corto.

This long road, this short road
This long road, this short road
God’s road through the life
we’ve made
—though surely, we don’t know—
this long road
with the narrow throat
this short road dawned in kindness
I’ve got islander’s feet for those celibate paths
without a handful of laughter
with all the wind in my chest
with no mother in my shirt
this road I feel my way through
with the feet of father and son
—truly, we don’t know—
if God, if life,
if we should take the shortcut
if we should claim this stretch.
This long road, short road.
