The test results wouldn't be posted for at least another hour. While she waited for them to be plastered to the gym door for all to see, Janie made her breakfast in the nearby park.
Breakfast consisted of a paper bag, the bottom lined with raw bacon, a couple of eggs cracked on top, a stick poked through the top of the bag, and the whole thing held over hot coals in a grill. She was alone this day, the way she wanted to be. Those test results were scaring the pants off of her. If she didn't score 100 on the math final, she was going to have to actually eat a hat.
Janie had been trying to decide which hat for two days now. The smaller the better of course, but it also mattered what material! She couldn't stand the taste of cashmere - too goat-y. Cotton she thought, which would probably be least likely to upset her stomach, especially after a breakfast of bacon and eggs cooked in a paper bag over coal.
Jason had put the bet to her. The lower score would lose. If they tied, no one would have to eat a hat. Jason would likely get 100, so she had to, too.
My part of the story-

They arrived at the gym.
Janie said, "I have a son, and I want my son to take this test." But I am not sure if he should come with an empty stomach or if he could eat some food.
What test do you want for him?
I want to take him for an abdominal test, and he should be tested for his heart too.
'When?'
On a weekend! 'Next Saturday at twelve noon.'
"Anything else?" The attendant took the money. "This is the third time you have come to my place regarding your son's test."
"This is my last responsibility to him," said Janie. She looked at Roberts, her son, standing close to her.
"It's not safe," said the attendant, "but your son should eat something before taking this test."
"What do you suggest?" Asked Janie.
"I suggest he eat something made of cotton."
"Cotton?"
"Yes, but synthetic is not a bad choice either!"
It was unbelievable to Roberts. He stopped looking at his mother and fixed his gaze on the attendant.
'How long have you not eaten anything?" asked the attendant as he approached Roberts.
'Yeah, it's been a while,' said Robarts, and sat down. The attendant also sat down as if he was waiting for an answer. For a long time, there was silence. Then Roberts said, "I haven't eaten cotton for a long time, but if I must, then the test should be taken right now."
Okay, I will arrange for that. What will you eat?
Robarts took off the attendant's hat and ate it immediately.
"Take his test now." Janie said, "And I have something that I want to distribute among the poor in the name of my son."
What's that? The assistant was totally surprised.
I have some paper caps for everyone that takes this test. Why the heck should we go for a lower score?
