Music is undeniably one of the greatest influence in our lives. Music is so good, I haven’t seen anyone that has ever disliked music. It’s a universal tune that people like, the creativity of music makes each tune unique, thereby helping categorize and differentiate itself based on people’s interest. This is something I have come to understand, the beauty of music and how it shapenes our mind is something worth experiencing.
Being a kid below 10 years old, my choice of music was something I won’t consider my choice. It was indirectly forced into me by the people around me. I listened to them because they were played, but after few years, when I got my first media phone, as we would call it camera phone, I started having my own taste in music. I can remember when I took my first media phone to my much older friend to give me some songs. I call him my much older friend because he was 12 years older than me, so he was someone I could easily look up to. The day I met him to transfer songs to my new media phone, he asked me what type of music I liked, I said I didn’t know. He transferred almost all the songs he had on his phone, and that started my journey in my taste of music.
My Dad is also another person I can credit in my choice of music. I can remember been driven to school every day and my highlight for the morning is my Dad’s playlist. It’s a very exciting one, where you have lots of R&B, Blues and Old School. He played one of the most amazing songs in the history of music, for every song he played, I always asked him who the artist was. My Dad was always glad to tell me and give me background history of these artists, you could tell that these songs meant a lot to him.
Fast forward to when I turned 13 years old and finally entered a boarding school. This boarding school impacted in my choice of music. I can remember some of these students sneaking an MP3 player or an iPod into the hostel so we could listen to songs in the midnight when everyone is fast asleep. We took turns in using these devices, and we made sure we kept them safe and hidden so they don’t get seen and seized by the school authorities. Good times, grateful for those moments. Music meant a lot to us in school, because that was the only way we had to escape the school stress. Money was not allowed in school, so our currency was food, I didn’t mind sacrificing my bread, egg or meat to the owner of an MP3 player or an iPod, just so I could listen to music at night.
The thing I loved so much about using these devices was the type of songs on them, the owners of these devices were very kind enough to always update their playlist with the latest songs. During the holidays I always looked forward to watching the music videos of these songs because that’s the highlight of how my boarding life went.
Fast forward to when I entered the university, I made new sets of friends with almost the same taste of music but this time I will agree that they had better taste. They introduced me into a type of music and artist I never knew I needed. I was opportune to have a DJ as a roommate, being a DJ knowing lots of songs is his job. He had lots of songs and that felt like heaven, his songs ranged from new to old. Songs that brought back good memories, he exposed me to lots of songs and musicians whose songs I can say changed my life.
