There is a time and space that belongs to me alone.
When the day finally draws to a close,
The last rays of the sun creep back into the shadows,
And the night sky once again welcomes in the darkness.
The schoolbooks are closed.
My family is fed. The chores are behind me.
And everyone has gone to bed -
... even the cats!
Then the house sighs in rhythmic slumber.
Everyone sleeps...
Everyone that is...but me.
I wander from room to room, gathering essentials:
A cosy blanket, a cuppa tea, my hardcovers, my laptop.
A lone sojourner inhabiting the stillness of the night.
I do so enjoy the silence.
When the only interruption is the hum of the fans,
And the creaking of the high beams.
I am re-awakened.
I release my roles, one by one:
Wife. Mom. Daughter. Sister.
And for a few fleeting hours...
I am just...
Me.
Sam.
The person who loves to read books with real pages,
Who thrives on poetry, and autobiography.
Who reads anything that challenges her mind,
Captures her heart,
Or feeds her soul.
Who enjoys communing with her deepest thoughts and imaginings.
Painting pictures with words.
Some nights...
Streaming Lifehouse,
And John Denver,
... on repeat.
And others, exploring her eclectic taste in music across cyberspace.
Finding connection in faraway lands.
Friendship across the miles.
Those quiet recesses of the night,
Are home to self-reflection, contemplation, and prayer.
A time for just being me.
Pure Bliss.
So when the sun has gone to bed, I always welcome the night with open arms...
