She squeezed her eyes shut but couldn't contain the hot tears which coursed down her cheeks. Her baby, they had told her, had an atrial septal defect.

For my interpretation, I thought of a mother who had just given birth to a beautiful baby boy only to be told that her baby had a congenital heart defect. Despite the doctor's assurances that her baby's chances are good, this mother is scared.
