This is my post on #freewriters3107 #dailyprompt I'm not going to volunteer hosted by 's.
The afternoon sun beat down on the Park, but inside the office, the air was freezing. Principal slammed a stack of brightly colored flyers onto his desk.
"Volunteers, Benson! That’s what the Park needs for the annual Founders' Day Gala," Principal barked, his veins bulging. "And since everyone else is 'busy,' you’re up."
Benson didn’t even look up from his comic book. He propped his feet onto the coffee table and chewed his gum loudly. "Yeah, see, here’s the thing, Mordecai and Rigby already bailed, and I’m on break. So... I’m not going to volunteer."
Principal’s face turned a dangerous shade of crimson. "You will volunteer! It builds character! It shows community spirit! If you don't sign this clipboard right now, I will personally guarantee your next performance review leaves you scrubbing the public restrooms with a toothbrush!"
Benson finally dropped the comic, his own temper instantly flaring to life. He stood up, towering over the desk as his glass dome turned a fiery, incandescent red. The gumballs inside rattled like a cage of angry hornets.
"I said no!" Benson roared, his voice shaking the windows. "I spend twenty-four hours a day managing two slackers who constantly destroy the fabric of reality! I am not spending my Saturday smiling at city council members and handing out lukewarm punch! Fix your own gala, Principal, or YOU'RE FIRED!"
Principal blinked, suddenly remembering that he didn't actually have jurisdiction over the Park manager. He cleared his throat, straightened his tie, and grabbed his flyers.
"Fine," Principal muttered. "But you're missing out on a very shiny ribbon."
