Reinforced Security at Ibom Plaza
In the heart of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Ibom Plaza had long been the city's beating pulse—a vibrant gathering spot for families, tourists, and locals enjoying its gardens, fountains, and giant screen. But over the years, neglect turned it into a shadow of itself. Weeds choked the flowerbeds, the fountain lay dry, and after dark, it became a haven for criminals: phone snatchers, loiterers, and worse. Residents whispered about muggings and avoided the area at night, fearing for their safety.
By late 2025, public outcry grew loud. Media reports highlighted the decay, prompting Governor Umo Eno to act swiftly. The plaza was sealed for remodeling—a fresh coat of paint, restored fountains, solar-powered lights, art galleries showcasing local heritage, and a massive LED screen for entertainment.
The real game-changer was security. The governor pledged tighter measures, establishing a permanent police outpost inside the plaza, equipped with two Hilux patrol vehicles. Strict rules were enforced: open from 7 a.m. to midnight only, with no loitering allowed. Joint patrols by police and other agencies cleared out hawkers and troublemakers.
On December 24, 2025, the remodeled Ibom Plaza reopened. Families returned, children laughed by the dancing fountains, and evenings buzzed with safe, lively energy. "It's like our city got its heart back," said one resident. Reinforced security had transformed fear into pride, making Ibom Plaza once again Uyo's safe, welcoming centerpiece.
