Ada had always been a hardworking girl. When she moved into her aunt’s house in the city to continue her schooling, she believed life would become easier. Instead, every morning began before sunrise. She swept the compound, washed piles of dishes, cooked breakfast, and still rushed to school tired and hungry.
At first, Ada kept quiet. She was grateful for a roof over her head. But the chores never ended. Each day her aunt added something new—washing clothes, cleaning the shop, even serving visitors while her cousins relaxed and watched television.
One evening, after returning from school with heavy books and a heavier heart, her aunt handed her another basket of clothes.
“Ada, wash these before night,” she ordered.
Ada looked at the basket, then at her cousins laughing nearby. Something inside her finally spoke.
“Aunty,” she said calmly, “I help in this house because I live here. But I also came here to learn.”
Her aunt frowned. “What do you mean?”
Ada took a deep breath. “I’m not your maid. I’m your niece, and I’m a student.”
The room became silent. For the first time, Ada stood tall and confident.
Her aunt studied her for a moment, surprised by the courage in her voice. Slowly, she sighed and called the other children.
“From today,” she said, “everyone will share the work.”
Ada smiled quietly. That night, she opened her books with peace in her heart, knowing that sometimes the bravest thing a person can do is simply speak up.
