Howdy Freewriters! It's throwback Thursday! I bring you an incident that happened when my baby joined pre-school. Welcome to my 5 Minute Freewrite blogš.
It all happened on the playground.
The playgroup teacher had given the students some time to interact with nature and play freely. Ngash and Chiira were busy building something with sticks and stones, fully immersed in their little world.
But in the chaos of their building, an accident happened.
Chiira unintentionally smashed Ngash's thumb with a stone, shocking him. The sudden pain and the sight of blood oozing from his nail snapped Ngash back to reality. Chiira, just as shocked, bolted when Ngash started crying; his cries quickly drawing the teacher's attention.
Ngash came home with a bandage wrapped tightly around his thumb.
His uncle, my brother, ran into him at our gate. The sight of the bandage immediately caught his eye and made him stop to check Ngash's condition even before they got into the house.
When he saw the smashed nail, it shocked him too.
When they got to the house, our curiosity was aroused too. We gathered around, eager to know what had happened. Ngash calmly explained the school incident; too calmly, in fact. For a child who throws a fit over a stubbed toe, his calmness caught us off guard.
It wasn't until bath time, just a few moments later, that I saw the nail for myself. Its sight sent chills, actual electrical shocks, through my nervous system. I winced harder than he did.
Two days later, the nail came off entirely.
