It was the last day of the tournament and Josephine was nervous. She and Rebecca had been promising each other that they would stick it out and that they would win this tournament because the greatest prize was five hundred dollars.
She pulled out Skink and put him in his carry-all. Skink was her bullfrog. Josephine practiced with Skink every day for the last month. She thought she got his race down to an art. Josephine knew Skink was ready to compete with all the other bullfrogs.
Rebecca pulled up in her mother's car and stepped out. She was wearing her green jumper holding Tandee the bullfrog's carry-all.
"My brother told me that we were gonna lose," Rebecca commented as she began to walk beside Josephine.
"Tell him I've seen prettier mudpuppies than him."
The girls picked up their pace and the old man wearing a polka dot tie gave them a huge toothless grin while waving them into the double doors.
When we walked into the lobby Josephine gasped. Waiting at the front of the line to check in for the bullfrog tournament was Rufus. Everybody knows who Rufus is; he owns the bullfrog Cannibal. World champion of bullfrog racing.
Rebecca put an arm on her friend and said in a loud voice, "Hush! Josephine,
don't you let him see that you're afraid! Just remember Cannibal isn't a tadpole anymore! Skink is young and fast!"
