"Let's go, Bobby! It's time to take the produce to the market!" said old Jim Lang.
WOOF! WOOF!
Bobby, a shepherd mix, happily helped his old friend to pull the cart. He did this by slipping into a specially fitted leather harness. The two of them were just able to get it rolling.
It was heavily laden with all sorts of produce, especially the season's harvest of beans. And of course Rex, the little terrier who had wandered onto the farm last summer.
"Here's a good spot, Bobby!" said Jim, trying to catch his breath after the long and difficult trip to town. The market was already bustling, despite their early start.
"No Sir, I will not trade my wheat for that mule, he looks vicious!" bellowed the farmer who had set up next to Mr. Lang. For his part, Mr. Lang was ignoring the exchange in favor of haggling with a young woman who wanted half a bushel of apples.
"I have no money, and I have to buy enough food for my family to survive the winter. We are new to this country and I am building a farm nearby."
"Come back after you sell your mule, and I will give you a good deal."
The man started to lead his mule away, when Bobby darted under its legs and gently but firmly grasped the lead right below the man's hand. Surprised, he dropped it.
Incredibly the startled animal didn't kick or bite the strange dog. Bobby, perhaps realizing that it wasn't such a good idea being so close to those hooves, backed up slowly towards his own stand. The lead was still in his mouth, and the mule followed, obviously curious.
"What do we have here, Bobby?" asked the old man. He had partly heard the exchange while haggling, despite being busy. A mule would certainly make life a lot easier, and he could afford to spare some food. It had been a very good year, especially for the beans.
"Excuse me Sir, this is my mule. But I am wanting to trade him for some food."
"I think we can work something out." said Jim, smiling. "That is if you like beans?"
"I love beans! In fact his name is Cool Beans!" said the surprised young man.
"Then load up Cool Beans with - well, beans! Take some apples, carrots, and potatoes too. All you can carry home. Bring him to this spot tomorrow, and I will take him. Don't worry, he will have a good home."
