Today was one of the most unforgettable family reunions I have ever experienced on my husband’s side of the family. It was not the usual kind of reunion filled only with laughter and celebration. This gathering carried both joy and sadness in our hearts, making it deeply meaningful for all of us.
My husband’s aunt was the one who truly wished to host this reunion. She personally requested it and was so excited to welcome everyone. She first scheduled it last April 8, but it was postponed because her eldest daughter, who works as an OFW in Saudi Arabia, was unable to come home on time. Even with the delay, she continued preparing everything with so much love and dedication. She had already arranged the wood for cooking, the plates, the cloth decorations, and many other things needed for the event. You could really feel how important this reunion was to her.
Sadly, on April 12, she was brought to the hospital and did not survive. It was heartbreaking for the whole family. Her passing left pain in everyone’s hearts, especially because she had been looking forward to this special day. But today, April 28, the family decided to continue the reunion even while she lies in wake, because this was truly her wish to gather the family together under one roof.
We prepared food and shared a simple but heartfelt program. We gave flowers and honored the elders of the family. It was emotional to see everyone gathered, carrying both grief and gratitude. There were tears, but there were also smiles. There was pain, but there was also love.
We started the program with a Bible service to thank God for all the blessings we have received. It reminded us that even in times of sorrow, we still have reasons to be grateful. Family is one of the greatest blessings of all. We are all emotional starting up to lunch. I feel the heavy heart and as shared messages all of us get emotional.
As I looked around, I saw the elders sitting together, eating side by side. I admired them so much. They have gone through many struggles, misunderstandings, and differences over the years. Sometimes there were hurt feelings, but when it comes to family, they choose humility. They swallow their pride for the sake of peace and unity. That is something truly inspiring. All I can say we must be good and loving to our siblings. No matter what siblings is siblings despite of understanding and disagreements.
This reunion taught me that family is not only about celebrating happy moments. It is also about standing together during painful times, reconciling, forgiving, and choosing love above all else. Though our hearts were heavy today, we were also thankful because we knew we were fulfilling the wish of someone who loved this family dearly.
