There is nothing quite like a simple gathering with family and friends here in the Philippines and the star of the show is always the food. When we get together whether its a birthday a holiday or just a random weekend when everyone is free we dont need fancy restaurants or expensive decorations. All we need is a table full of good food, some cold drinks and great company. Thats when the real fun begins.
Looking at this spread its exactly the kind of food you would see on the table at these happy moments. We love bringing out dishes that are fresh tasty and easy to share.
You will often see those refreshing seaweed salads first the guso and lato. They are perfect for a hot afternoon and everyone loves grabbing a spoonful because they are so light and crunchy. They set the mood for the meal making everyone feel relaxed and ready to eat.
Then there is the kinilaw which is always a big hit. Someone usually passes the bowl around and you can hear people laughing as they tease each other about who put too much chili on their plate. Its those little moments that make gatherings special.
And of course you cant have a get together without raw papaya salad. Its a staple because its filling and everyone likes it so its always there to add some good fiber foods.
The vegetable dishes like the pako salad and the mixed greens show how much we love eating fresh from nature. Even if we have a lot of meat or seafood, we always make sure there are veggies to balance it out.
And then come the heavy hitters the shrimp the crabs and the adobong pusit. These are the dishes that make everyones eyes go wide.
There is usually a bit of friendly chaos as people reach for the best parts, like the crab claws or the biggest shrimp. We dont mind getting our hands a little messy while peeling shells its all part of the fun.
Finally, the adobong pusit squid cooked in that rich tangy and savory adobo sauce. Its such a comforting dish full of those classic Filipino flavors we all know and love.
We celebrate this food not just because it tastes amazing but because of what it represents. Every dish on that table is usually made with love maybe even using recipes passed down from our parents or grandparents.
When we sit down to eat we are not just filling our stomachs we are making memories. We talk we joke we share stories and we stay at the table for hours even after the food is gone. These simple gatherings are the heart of our culture and this delicious food is what brings us all together time and time again.
