From a Clueless Beginner to an Experienced Nomad
After all, I started this journey as a clueless 18y/old and today it has been quite a few years since I moved around, or worked remotely. And if I start from scratch again, at least I know what I did wrong from my previous experiences.
Then vs Now
When I first idolized the Digital Nomad lifestyle, the landscape was a lot more different than today. Strangely, It was much easier to find online opportunities. These days, online work is riddled with scams and unpaid labor. As much as the type of jobs that can be done remotely expanded, the competition is fiercer out there. At the same time, I didn’t feel the same entrepreneurship camaraderie compared to the past.
Now, it’s everyone for themselves and if you’re building a startup in 2026, it isn’t as sexy as back in the day. But maybe what I assumed is quite wrong because I haven’t really been active in the sphere and its community just as I did back in the day. Nowadays, I learned that I can have both stability as well as still working nomadically.
Why Choose This Lifestyle?
On my way to the office today, I thought about how connectivity is not an issue anymore. In fact, traveling gets even easier and there are plenty of ways to find discounted transportation and accommodations. In the end, everything boils down to the type of comfort and the goal that drives you to become a digital nomad.
There are more cafes and establishments offering comfortable places to work from. There are plenty of ways to make money online as well as traveling all around in exchange or something. In fact, it’s a lot easier to find more information about this lifestyle than ever before. But again, once again it all boils down to, why do we choose this lifestyle?
For one, I learned that this isn’t for everyone. Eventually you can get homesick and wanting stability over everything. When we switch environment, we’re switching our routine and could be the way we live too. It’s really hard to stick with the same routine in the same place since the new place also requires different challenges.
However, sometimes, a new place can help us reset and renew our routine. For me personally, whenever I am switching to a new place, I’d have a hard time falling asleep or not knowing what to do but as I am learning from my past mistakes, no matter where I go and what circumstances I have, there are some non-negotiables that I have to do.
Age, Discipline, and Boundaries
I think this is what separates those who started younger vs those who started nomadism in their 30’s or late 20’s. Typically those who start in their late 20’s and 30’s has had a good boundaries and some type of discipline. So, it doesn’t matter where they might live, they’ll know and do the same thing.
Think about simple things in life such as working out, going out with friends, knowing when to start work and when not to. When you’re younger, sometimes you have a hard time sticking to all that, the discipline isn’t just there.
Now, I learned that it’s easy for me to stick to a certain routine despite my location. I still get some type of workout, some type of break and socialized in between as well. So, now I realized that I can still live the digital nomad life and travel frequently without sacrificing my routine.
