The 5th Generation of Game Consoles was a great generational Jump from its predecessor. Consoles of this generation boasted huge libraries and was the first generation to offer native 3D capabilities.
Popular 5th Generation Consoles
The main competition in the 5th generation was Playstation, Nintendo 64 and SEGA Saturn. The All of which processed 3D differently, and used different ways to store the games data.
The PlayStation and SEGA Saturn released in 1995, and opted for CD-ROMs which allowed the games to have a huge storage. The Nintendo 64 which was released in 1996 opted for Cartridges instead. The differences in architecture led each console to have a recognizable library by their technology.
Lesser Known Consoles
Atari Jaguar
Jaguar was the last home console by Atari. It was known for its 64-bit architecture, but it failed commercially due to the lack of 3rd Party support.
The console had a port of "Doom" a popular game at the time and it showed the system's capabilities, but it suffered some technical problems compared to other versions of the game.
Amiga CD32
The last Commodore Console. Amiga CD32 was the first CD-ROM based console before the SEGA Saturn. It released in 1993. The system had a short life span due to Commodore's bankruptcy. Its limited availability made it a Collectors Item over the years.
3DO Interactive Multiplayer
Was a series of Consoles developed by multiple manufacturers that run games on the same technology. The most popluar of which was published by Parasonic. It was one of the highest priced consoles and didn't do well commercially.
What do you think?
Writing this article was a learning experience for me as well, as I only heard about these 3 consoles in passing. I watched a few videos for the best games for each device, and I can understand why they failed compared to the Top 3 of that generation.
They had a bunch of exclusive games, so I highly recommend watching videos about their best games if you're interested!
