Audi is introducing AI-assisted quality control on its production lines. The process includes automatic quality testing of spot welds in car body construction. Such a process is able to control about 1.5 million spot welds on 300 vehicles each shift at its Neckarsulm site. In comparison, the previous method of manual, random checking of welds using the ultrasonic method controlled 5 randomly selected points per car. The solution is being developed together with Siemens and Amazon Web Services as part of the Volkswagen Group's industrial cloud.
