A bit about the museum๐โโ๏ธ๐จโ๐ซ/Un poco sobre el museo๐๐

If you decide to travel to the Algarve and you stay in the surroundings of Portimao then I recommend that you visit the museum! It opened its doors to the public in 2008 and is located next to the "Arade" river, the museum was built in an old sardine canning factory and tells the story of the Portuguese fishing industry! The factory was built in 1889. Something interesting to note about the museum is that it won an award in "2010" for one of the best museums in Europe!

How did it influence the canning industry? ๐โโ๏ธ๐จโ๐ซ/Como influyo la industria de enlatados๐๐

The canning factories were one of the main sources of "mass" jobs that Portugal had, it is also known that they were one of the first where women worked together with men! The fish canning industry had a great influence in the first and second world war! thanks to it the soldiers of "both sides" could feed themselves with sources of protein! It is known that the first canned fish and shellfish factory opened its doors in Portugal in 1853.

Few know but this industrialization over time was perfected until it became a traditional art in Portugal, it reached such a high level that canned food in Portugal is known worldwide for being basic and simple foods but with an incomparable flavor, it was a very difficult to handle and despite their ups and downs today they are a good source of employment in the country!

Ability to innovate๐โโ๏ธ๐จโ๐ซ/Capacidad para innovar๐๐

In society only canned food is known around 1810 and it was written by a Frenchman! one of the main problems we had to deal with for many years was the lack of preserving food! and it is that the refrigerator was barely invented in 1910, therefore canned food revolutionized the "art of preserving animals and vegetables". We could then summarize everything as: "canned fish were a cutting edge technology for over a hundred years."

Normally a fish at room temperature, that is, at about "25 degrees" ends up being damaged very quickly! but in the canning process the fish can last for many years, we literally go from a fish that goes bad in "two days" to creating a product in a very simple can that lasts for more than 5 years! crazy right???

How does the magic happen?๐โโ๏ธ๐จโ๐ซ/Como ocurre la magia??

We are interested in knowing how this "miracle" happens, how can a sardine last more than five years without being damaged? The key to canned food is its hermetic seal, that is, all the air inside the can is extracted, and of course, do you know of any bacteria that can survive without oxygen? In conclusion, we have fish, salt and oil inside a can. Before inventing canning our ancestors used the techniques of salting, fermenting and dehydrating!

What makes Portugal a "top" country for the canning industry is its geographical location, we are in a coastal point where the biodiversity of the "gulf" travels in its reproductive periods! Of course fishing is one of the oldest jobs in Portugal.

Here I have an interesting fact, the Portuguese consume more than 60kg of fish, being the third country in the world with the most consumption! And of course this makes us a country whose gastronomy focuses on various dishes with shellfish and fish!

When I read these articles I realize how my town has regressed economically, for example, more than 20 years ago Portugal exported 65% of its canned goods, and only consumed 10%, more was exported than what was consumed in the country. country being a very strong source of economic income!

bankrupt market๐โโ๏ธ๐จโ๐ซ/Mercado en quiebra๐๐

After the end of the Second World War, the market was still booming, with more than 400 factories in Portugal working, preparing more than 41,000 tons, but in subsequent years the Portuguese government raised the tax rates for these industries and adding to the little demand ended up breaking many of them!
