Throughout the month of June, ill be looking back at historical moments from the past. From conflicts to coronations, sporting moments to royal memories, and famous firsts and lasts, with my love of all things shiny and precious, ill be trying to tie these events in with coins that have been created to commemorate these moments.
In 1994 it was decided that a £2 coin was needed for general circulation. On 15 June 1998, the first bi-metallic £2 coins entered circulation after four years of preparation. The coin’s revolutionary composition and design differentiated it from other single metal decimal coins which had been released between 1986 and 1996.

Since then, there have been umpteen different designs released by the Royal mint throughout the years. The mintage figures have varied greatly and so has there value on the secondhand market -
As you can see from the image above, there really has been all kinds of different commemorative designs. The £2 coin has become a staple for UK coin collectors, and some of the rarer coins can fetch 50X face value on Internet auction sites.
The "scarcity index", created by changechecker.org, shows the most sought-after circulation £2 coins that are out there at the moment.
