Nestled in the serene and picturesque hills of Dwarahat in the Almora district of Uttarakhand, the Dunagiri Temple stands as a sacred and spiritually powerful site that attracts devotees and seekers from across the country. Perched at an altitude of around 8,000 feet above sea level, this ancient temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga, worshipped here in the form of Dunagiri Devi or Maa Dunagiri.

It is one of the Shakti Peethas, where the divine feminine energy is believed to reside, and is especially revered by followers of the Shakta and Nath traditions. According to legends, the temple is associated with the Ramayana and Mahabharata. It is believed that during the time of the Ramayana, when Lord Hanuman was sent to fetch the Sanjeevani herb to save Lakshmana, a part of the mountain he carried fell here, making the place highly energetic and sacred. Similarly, the Pandavas are said to have meditated in the forests surrounding Dunagiri during their exile. The temple’s energy is often described as peaceful yet powerful, making it an ideal destination for meditation and introspection. Many yogis and saints, including Lahiri Mahasaya, are believed to have had deep spiritual experiences in the vicinity of Dunagiri. In fact, the area is also linked with the lineage of Mahavatar Babaji, the immortal yogi referenced in the famous book Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda.
The temple’s architecture is simple yet elegant, constructed in the traditional Kumaoni style using stone and wood, blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings. A sense of timelessness envelopes the temple, and the chants of mantras echoing through the hills elevate the spiritual atmosphere. Festivals such as Navratri and Dussehra are celebrated with great enthusiasm here, drawing large crowds of pilgrims. During these times, the temple premises come alive with rituals, devotional music, and colorful processions.
