Have you ever been to Greece? The beauty of its islands and beaches with crystal clear water is extraordinary. On one of our previous trips there we went to the Thassos island which is located in the Aegean sea and it's about 45 minutes ferryboat drive from the Kavala seaport.
The capital city of Thassos, Limenas, where we booked our apartments has visible traces of ruins and landmarks that speak of the rich history of this place and many wars it has seen. The town is busy with tourists, especially being the port so big ferries are constantly arriving and departing with people. Logically, if you want to see it's best beaches you want to avoid the ones in the city which are too urban and dirty.
Thus having a car is a great way to set yourself up for success as most of the best beaches are further away from the city. You can also rent a car or motorcycles if you are not arriving with one. While still in Limenas, you have to visit the Karnagio beach bar, located at the end of the old port, deep into the sea. The sunsets here are mesmerizing, you can enjoy a cold drink in a cafe and watch the waves crush against the rocks. Truly a place for peaceful evening meditation. Right on the hill, 50 meters from the bar, there's a little blue-white Church and a paved road that leads to a pine forest.
The main star of our trip was the Vathi beach - it's located 7km away from the city and you'll have to drive for a few minutes on the dusty, macadam road, but it's worth it. It's less popular, so there isn't many visitors there. And it's wild so you can freely use it without having to buy sunbeds. Its crystal clear water attracts magnificent sea world, when you dive down you might see a jellyfish or an octopus.
On the way to Vathi you will pass by the Marble beach which is the most popular one on the island. For a reason as it is indeed beautiful with white pebbles on the ground and crystal turquoise water. But the popularity brings the crowd so make sure to get here early or just avoid it. Other beaches worth visiting that are closer to the city include La Scala (modern, with a club, and different water activity options), Papalomini, Glykadi... If you ever find yourself in Greece, consider visiting this captivating island.
